Opportunity for Artists: Kresen Kernow Public Art Commission

We are delighted to offer this opportunity for artists interested in applying for a visual public art commission at Kresen Kernow.

Funded by Arts Council England, the artwork will be inspired by the theme My Cornwall: My Home and will commemorate the temporary return to Cornwall in 2021 of several historic Cornish manuscripts, including the Ordinalia.  As part of the process of developing and realising the public artwork, we expect the chosen artist to work with Cornish community groups and the Archives and Cornish Studies Service (ACSS) team, to gain local knowledge and engagement.  We are looking for a high-quality artwork which will intrigue, surprise, challenge and delight and which will draw people to Kresen Kernow and Redruth.

The principles of New Rules of Public Art will inform the selection of the commissioned artist.

The commission is worth £35,000. This will cover artist fees and all expenses connected to the realisation of the project.  It will run from May 2021 and will be unveiled to the public on St Piran’s Day, 5 March 2022.

Application process

Stage 1 is a call for Expressions of Interest in response to the themes outlined in the brief. Artists will be shortlisted by a panel and up to 5 will be invited to tender for Stage 2.

Stage 2 will involve a detailed proposal with a concept design and quotation. A small fee will be available to pay for artists’ time at this stage.

This is a call for Stage 1: Expressions of Interest in response to the themes outlined in the brief. No concept designs or specific ideas need to be submitted at Stage 1.
