The 1700s saw the birth of modern theatre in Britain. George Lillo’s (1693-1739) play ‘The Cornish or Penryn Tragedy, or The Fatal Curiosity’ was first produced in 1736. Lillo was the first playwright to really recognise Cornish distinctiveness.
