Scan of the American Settler leaflet

NORTH AMERICA

Migration to America was strongly encouraged in 19th century Britain, and when the mining boom hit the American West, thousands of Cornish people flocked there in search of their fortunes. In 1894 over 60% of the 6,000 population of Grass Valley, California was thought to be from Cornwall. This 1883 edition of The American Settler provided news and information for migrants to the ‘New World’. (GRA/224)
