Stewards accounts CL

Colour photograph of books.

Manor accounts of income and expenditure would have been kept by the manor’s steward or bailiff and each account would nearly always cover a single year, running from Michaelmas (29 September) to Michaelmas. Income was collected from rents, the sale of produce or from fines issued in the manorial court. Records of expenditure paid out by the steward would include purchasing corn or livestock, repairing buildings or paying for labour. These steward account books are from the Robartes family of Lanhydrock collection. (CL/)
