Scan of colourful illustrated letter

GC Stephens sent this beautifully illustrated letter back to his aunt from California in 1862. Like many migrants today, when the Cornish moved overseas they often joined people they knew from home. From the content of this letter we can see how many acquaintances he and his aunt had in America. In it he records: “Peter come over to see me last week… he… brought Tom Warren with him… the next day we went up to see Mr and Mrs Henry Bone…” These networks helped create a sense of home in unfamiliar places thousands of miles from Cornwall.
