Old photograph of mine works in South Africa

Cornish mining engineer, Jervis Veale, kept two incredible photo albums from his travels to mines across the world. This photo includes Cecil Rhodes (then prime minister of the Cape Colony, part of South Africa). Many of his imperialist schemes were underwritten by Cornish banker Lewis Mitchell, and Cornish mine captain Francis Oats managed Rhodes’ famous De Beers mine. (X955/2 p33)
